hello,
as you probably know i’m a native with free time, i never had to learn french as a second language, so i suppose some of the readers can share their personal reasons in the comments, if they wouldn’t mind? my guesses are :
- for the historical side : france has been the country of human rights. when you look at a map, it’s in the middle of everything. learn a language can help you get closer to its history.
- for the linguistic side : the french have colonized and been colonized. languages have been imported. you can find traces of french in english or dutch and any romance language (spanish, italian, romanian, etc). if you decide to learn any of those languages, and that includes latin, french will be a very precious tool.
- for the cultural side : hugh jackman is a very good actor but reading dans le texte the death of jean valjean is a tragedy that deserves to be lived. also, you get to watch pierrot le fou without bad dubbing, you get to listen to piaf and understand what she’s about, etc.
- for the social side : contrary to some other countries (i’m thinking belgium because i’ve had that conversation recently but there are others), you can go anywhere in france and talk to anybody if you speak french. there are dialects but they’re not used outside of private circles, if at all (and they’re getting more and more lost in time). because of the colonization, you can also go to a part of belgium and switzerland, canada (be ready to deal with the accent though) and northern africa without a translator.
this is probably not the whole painting but that’s a start. hope this helps! x
